Our Projects

Pirunu Kusak – Pirunu Hisak (A Full Stomach – A Full Mind) School Food Assistance Program (SFP)

The School Food Assistance Program (SFP) improves nutrition and learning opportunities for children in underprivileged Sri Lankan schools by providing nutritious lunches. Launched in 2021 to supplement the government’s school food program, PiKu-PiHi has grown to support nearly 5,000 children as of January 2024. While the government’s program has since evolved, we continue to fill critical gaps by assisting excluded grades and providing essential nutrition, such as daily milk.

Our focus remains on financially struggling students, small schools with fewer than 50 children, voluntary evening classes, and schools not covered by the government’s initiative. Additionally, SFP extends support to university students in need, monastic colleges, early childhood centres, and students beyond grade 6.

By nourishing young minds, we empower brighter futures. Click HERE to learn more and read recent posts about our SFP program.

Educational Scholarships Programs

We provide educational scholarships to students in need by directly connecting them with willing donors. Each student is carefully identified and verified to ensure genuine financial need.

The process begins with referrals from teachers, principals, or community leaders, who nominate students requiring assistance. A PKPH volunteer committee then conducts a thorough review, including financial verification from the parents, recommendations from the Grama Sevaka, and confirmation from the school administration. Once approved, the student is matched with a donor who commits to funding the scholarship for a set amount per month over a defined period. If a donor is unable to continue, the student is promptly reassigned to a new supporter.

To ensure transparency and engagement, the donor, student, a PKPH volunteer administrator, the student’s parent(s), and a teacher/principal are connected in a WhatsApp group. This platform allows for monthly fund receipt acknowledgements and regular updates on the student’s academic progress.

Online Educational Program

Our free Online Educational Program provides free virtual lessons for students in rural schools facing teacher shortages in key subjects. This initiative ensures that students receive quality education despite resource limitations.

Our Support Includes:

📱 Access to Technology – Providing tablets, computers, and internet data subscriptions where needed.
👨‍🏫 Volunteer Teachers – Subject experts who generously donate their time for weekly online sessions. Currently, we offer English and Physics classes via Zoom, with plans to expand into other subjects as additional volunteers become available.
🏫 Convenient Learning Schedule – Classes are held immediately after school as an on-campus after-school program, ensuring accessibility and participation.

By bridging the education gap with technology and dedicated mentorship, we empower students with the knowledge they need to succeed.

Rural Society Empowerment Program

Our Rural Empowerment Program aims to uplift the families of underprivileged schoolchildren, creating a stable environment that enables students to succeed academically. Through targeted initiatives, we address critical challenges faced by rural communities.

Current Projects:

🌞 Anduren Eliyata (Out of the Darkness to Light-3)
Many students in rural areas lack access to electricity, relying on bottle lamps and other hazardous lighting methods. To ensure they can study safely, we partner with donors to provide rechargeable solar lamps, bringing light and opportunity to their homes.

🐣 Home Poultry Husbandry
To promote self-sufficiency and nutrition, we support families in our School Food Assistance Program by providing chicks and financial aid to raise hens for egg production. In return, families donate a portion of their eggs to school meals while using the rest for household consumption or sale, helping to improve their financial stability.

By empowering families, we strengthen entire communities—one project at a time.

Providing Essential Facilities for Students

We work to bridge resource gaps in rural Sri Lankan schools by identifying critical needs and coordinating donor support for procurement or construction projects. By improving school infrastructure and resources, we create better learning environments and opportunities for students.

Our efforts to date have included:

🏫 Building Construction – Constructing new school buildings to expand learning spaces.
🚻 Hygienic Toilets – Installing sanitary toilet facilities to promote health and hygiene.
🔆 Solar Lighting – Providing solar-powered lights for students in areas without electricity.
💧 Clean Water Access – Setting up RO water filtration systems in schools.
🎶 Music & Arts Support – Supplying musical instruments and band costumes for school programs.
🪑 Educational Furniture – Donating desks, chairs, and other essentials for schools and vocational training centres.

Through these initiatives, we ensure that students have the basic facilities needed to learn, grow, and thrive.
