SFP 2 – Nachchaduwa Muslim College : “Piku Pihi” Started to Feed Second School
The Coconut Sambol and Rice Project – Keeping Kids in School
What started as a simple idea to feed hungry students has blossomed into a powerful movement, now supporting children in not one, but two schools. The “Coconut Sambol and Rice Project” began at Nachchaduwa Muslim College, where a dedicated group of teachers and volunteers set out to ensure no child had to miss school because of an empty stomach.
The initial effort at Nachchaduwa Muslim College was a huge success, and now the project has expanded to a second school. This expansion is a testament to the hard work and passion of everyone involved. It’s a challenging task to keep the project going week after week, but the dedication of both local and international volunteers is making it happen. The project is an amazing example of empowerment in action. By providing a basic meal, these volunteers are directly tackling the issue of school absenteeism. When children don’t have enough to eat, they often stop coming to school. This project is a lifeline, keeping them in the classroom and giving them a chance at a brighter future.
At the heart of this initiative are two teachers, along with the principals and parents, who work tirelessly to feed the children. While it’s called the “Coconut Sambol and Rice Project,” they often find other food from the community to cook, because, as one teacher put it, “we are like parents to these children—we can’t give them anything less than our best.”
Currently, the project feeds about 45 children at school. The cost is approximately LKR 5,000 per week, and with schools currently open three days a week, they are able to manage. However, with the addition of the second school, they are now feeding 90 children in total. Today marks a special day as meals are being served at the second school for the first time. A special thanks goes to Kumudu Teacher for her incredible effort and to the Nachchaduwa People’s Bank for their support in managing the accounts, ensuring the teachers don’t waste time in long queues.
The generosity from people around the world is pouring in, and there are already two more groups getting ready to take on two new schools. This incredible project is a powerful reminder of what a community can achieve when people come together.
A special note of thanks was extended to Tharanga, whose recent financial contribution is helping to feed all 90 children for the next two weeks. Thank you to everyone who stands in line to help, and to everyone who has contributed to this worthy cause.
