Three Schools in Mihintale: Two Already Started and One to Go
SFP 9 – Kunuragama, Mihintale
SFP 10 – Weruppankulama, Mihintale
These are the schools we are currently supporting in Mihintale. Kunuragama school started their program two days ago, and Weruppankulama started yesterday.
The Team Behind the Scenes;
Back in the day, Janaka, Madawa, and Athili might be considered international figures now, but they were the kids in our 12th-grade math class who struggled with the easy stuff. Physics was a real challenge for us, and we were always in the back of the classroom.
They know that they can’t get anything done from a doctor or an engineer when they get sick. And we realize we need them for projects like this. Janaka has been a huge help with school projects for a long time. This is the first time the other two have helped with one of my projects. And when they do get involved, they don’t just agree to help; they’ll do something and then check with me to make sure it’s the right way to do it.
These schools are in communities that have been left behind. They are villages that haven’t developed on their own and haven’t figured out how to come together to do things.
They didn’t have an understanding of how to feed their children. That’s why Sashini got involved, going to each village to help people change their mindset and work together to get the kids fed and back in school. The Mihintale MOH and PHI will check the food safety. We don’t want the kids to get sick from what we give them to eat.
For our first phase, we’re focusing on schools with fewer than 50 students.
A Global Effort
The distance between Canada, Australia, Sri Lanka, and Mihintale isn’t a problem for us. When we talk, one of us might be sleeping, another is awake, and another is eating, but it’s not an issue. I don’t even think about it because I know they’re helping me out, even in their sleep.
None of them have been tagged in our FB posts, but they’re still in the loop. Feel free to tag someone who can help, as this is a year-long project.
And you know what the best part is?
When we ask them to serve just rice and coconut sambol, no one ever serves just that. They always add two or three other dishes. That’s what community empowerment is all about!
