SFP 23: From Books to Blessings in Kalu Ebe
In the heart of Sri Lanka, tucked away near the ancient fortress of Ritigala, lies Kalu Ebe, a village so remote it feels like a world of its own. It’s a place where happiness is found in the simplest acts of kindness, and our journey to bring a little bit of that joy to the local school has been a true testament to the power of community. This is the story of our ongoing project, SFP 23.
A Timeline of Giving
Our mission began in 2019. We learned that the children at the Kalu Ebe school had no books, but they did have something to eat. So, we brought them all the study materials they needed. However, we quickly saw another problem: they had no proper desks or chairs.
The following year, in 2020, we returned with a clear purpose. We delivered desks and chairs, ensuring the children had a proper place to sit and learn. They still had food, and now, they had the furniture they needed to use their new books.
The year 2021 was a difficult one for everyone. With the COVID-19 pandemic, we couldn’t visit, and the children were told to stay home from school. Our project was put on hold, but our commitment never wavered.
By 2022, we were back. The children now had their desks and chairs, but we knew they needed more. We returned to provide them with food, and it felt like we had come full circle. The happiness on their faces was a powerful reminder of why we started this in the first place.
The People Behind the Project
This work wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible individuals who stepped up to help. Their names were often unmentioned, but today, we want to recognize them:
* In 2019, Rasika was the one who came forward to help.
* In 2020, we had the crucial support of Janaka.
* And in 2022, a true patron emerged: Prabhath M. Ahangamage. I first knew Prabhath as someone who sent money anonymously, telling us to “do whatever is needed” and refusing to take credit. His dedication was so profound that we made him the official guardian of the school, entrusting him to carry on the work.
We also have to give a special mention to Thilini Teacher. Without her tireless support and guidance since 2019, none of this would have happened. She is the backbone of this entire project, and we are eternally grateful for her commitment.
Looking Ahead to 2023
As 2023 approaches, we are already thinking about the next step. The children have been receiving milk for a long time, and we’re wondering if they might be tired of it. Thilini Teacher recently asked, “Should we give them milk, rice, and hoppers in a rotation instead?” It’s a small question that shows the great care we have for these children’s happiness and well-being.
The project is more than just providing supplies; it’s about building a lasting connection and bringing joy to a community that has so little. Happiness, as they say, is found right there.
