Online Physics Teaching Programme

In March and August 2023, we launched an online physics teaching programme for Medawachchiya National School. Physics is a mandatory subject for students aspiring to become doctors or engineers. However, some schools with science streams lack physics teachers, leaving students with two options: learn a subject taught in school or seek tuition.

Addressing the Teacher Shortage

Medawachchiya National School faced a shortage of physics teachers. To address this, we sought help from schools with surplus physics teachers and decided to teach six students ourselves. The school provided incredible support, and we began teaching during the holidays, with plans to use smart boards once the semester started.

Our Mission

Our goal was to help students pass all three science papers, aiming for at least a pass. The dedicated teachers, who volunteered without any profit motive, aimed to send these students to university. No student from Medawachchiya National School had previously gone to university for Maths and Science.

Collaboration with Universities

We sought assistance from the Engineering Faculties in Peradeniya and Moratuwa. In 2024, engineers from Moratuwa, along with their students, agreed to teach physics to the children of Medawachchiya Maithripala Senananayaka National School. The programme officially started on December 13, 2023.

Overcoming Challenges

Teaching physics online posed several challenges:

  • Some students lacked a signal or device.
  • Others had a signal but no device, or vice versa.
  • Some had both but couldn’t afford data.

We began by checking signals at home and providing financial help to those in need. Despite the difficulties, the dedicated teachers, including university students Sandun and Sandushan, planned and executed the lessons with incredible patience and passion.

The Journey Ahead

Our classes are held on Mondays and Thursdays from 8 to 10 PM. In January 2025, all six students will face their exams. These students include those who initially decided not to write, those who considered switching subjects, and those who returned to school despite financial difficulties.

A Community Effort

We received support from various individuals and organizations:

  • The principal and chemistry teacher, Kaushalaya, coordinated the programme.
  • Engineering students from the Faculty of Engineering, University of Moratuwa volunteered to teach.
  • Community members provided the necessary information and documents.

Conclusion

This programme showcases the power of community and dedication. It highlights the importance of physics for aspiring doctors and engineers and aims to make their dreams a reality. We are committed to continuing this journey and making a difference in the lives of these children.

Thank you for your continued support.
