We Have Crossed the Six Crore Mark!
It has been a long journey since the inception of Piku Pihi. Initially, a small group of people came together in a messenger group with the simple goal of providing sambal and rice to children during a time of severe political, economic, and social turmoil in Sri Lanka. Over time, this group grew into a large WhatsApp community, encompassing 130 schools and several private donor groups.
Yesterday, I was thrilled to discover that we have surpassed the six crore mark in donations. To date, we have provided over six crore rupees to 130 schools in Anuradhapura, ensuring that children receive their lunch. Our transparent system allows anyone to view the financial details at any time through 130 virtual accounts linked to the main donation account. This transparency has been crucial in maintaining trust and accountability.
Beyond schools, we have extended our support to five Montessori schools and two university faculties. Our reach has expanded to Polonnaruwa, Kurunegala, Dambulla, Sigiriya, Galle, Ratnapura, and Bibila. We also offer private scholarships for children facing severe economic hardships and have initiated programs to empower parents economically. Schools have not only started cooking meals but also gardening projects. This incredible social media group unites people from around the world who share a deep love for Sri Lanka. Among us are aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters, and nephews who are committed to providing free education to the next generation.
Thanks to this dedicated group, we are currently feeding 4,447 children daily. This impact is evident in the increased enrolment for the next academic year, as more children choose to attend local schools instead of travelling long distances. These schools now have access to purified water, libraries, sports equipment, online English classes, computers, and internet facilities.
I extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has contributed to this cause, trusting and supporting children they have never met. Your generosity has made a significant difference, and the total donations have now exceeded six crore rupees. Thank you to everyone in Sri Lanka and abroad who has stepped up to ensure these children have food, clothing, and books. Your direct contributions have made this possible.
